Introduction

School of Civil Engineering of Suzhou University of Science and Technology was founded in 1985. The School has 116 members including 90 faculty members and 27 staff members, among which there are 16 professors and 36 associate professors, 5 doctoral supervisors and 23 master's supervisors, 1 National Exemplary Teachers, 3 Young Scientist of Outstanding Achievement at national level or at provincial/ministry level. The percentage of people who have senior title is 58, and that of people who have doctor’s degree is 26. There are 3, 1 and 8 people are titled as State Department Special Allowance Experts, 333 Cross-century Academic Leaders of Jiangsu Province and Blue Project of Jiangsu Province, respectively.
School of Civil Engineering has 2 authorized units for master’s degree, namely Structural Engineering and Disaster Prevention and Reduction Engineering and Protective Engineering. There are 133 graduate students now. Structural Engineering is titled as Key Disciplinary Fields of Jiangsu Province. The Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Engineering Structure is one of the Jiangsu Provincial Key Labs, and it is also the Science Facility of Yekemin Enterprise-academy Workstation. The steel-structure-team is both the Jiangsu Provincial Talent Research Team and the Jiangsu Provincial Talent Teaching Team.
School of Civil Engineering has 5 undergraduate majors: Civil Engineering, Engineering Management, Engineering Mechanics, Transportation Engineering and Inorganic Non-metal Material Engineering. The 2 master programs offered are Civil Engineering, and Disaster Prevention and Reduction Engineering and Protective Engineering. There are 1500 undergraduate students now.
From 1986 to 1995, Department of Urban Construction, one of the departments of Urban Construction and Environmental Protection Institute, part of the previous incarnation of University of Science and Technology of Suzhou, had two undergraduate majors, namely Industrial and Civil Architecture and Urban Construction Engineering. The Urban Construction Engineering had two majorities named as Water Supply and Sewage Engineering and Road and Bridge Engineering between 1990 and 1995. Industrial and Civil Architecture was renamed as Construction Engineering, and Road and Bridge Engineering was renamed as Transportation and Civil Engineering in 1995. According to the adjustment of the engineering major index, the aforementioned two majors renamed as Civil Engineering comprised of Building Engineering and Road and Bridge Engineering in 1999. Civil Engineering is one of the Key Majors of the University of Science and Technology of Suzhou. It passed the National Professional Assessment in 2005 and 2010. It was licensed to enroll new students in the first batch in Jiangsu Province in 2006 and was selected as the Characteristic Subjects at the Provincial Level. Civil and Environmental Engineering achieved the First-stage Project of Jiangsu Provincial Characteristic Discipline in 2010.
From 1985, Department of Urban Management, another department of Urban Construction and Environmental Protection Institute, had one undergraduate major, namely Real Estate Management. In 1986, 1993 and 1996, Municipal Engineering management, Real Estate Management and Architectural Engineering management was opened up, respectively. In 1999, according to the adjustment of the undergraduate major index, the aforementioned specialties were renamed as Engineering Management, comprised of Engineering Project Management and Administration and Management of Real Estate. Engineering Management passed the National Professional Assessment in 2005 and 2010.
In 2002, 2003 and 2004, School of Civil Engineering was licensed to enroll new students majored in Engineering Mechanics, Transportation Engineering and Inorganic Non-metal Material Engineering, respectively.
School of Civil Engineering is composed of 5 departments, 1 test center, 5 research centers, 3 Affairs Office and 1 limited Company. The departments are named as Department of Building Engineering, Department of Engineering Management, Department of Road and Bridge Engineering, Department of Engineering Mechanics and Department of Material Engineering, respectively. The research center is Testing Center for Civil Engineering. The 5 research centers are Steel Structure Research Center, Civil Engineering Technology Application Research Center, Real Estate Research Center, International Engineering Management Research Center and Structural Testing and Strengthen Center, respectively. The 3 Affairs Office are Comprehensive Office, Teaching Office and Office of Student Work, respectively. The company is named as Engineering Consulting Company of Suzhou Huanyuan.
