Introduction

The School of Civil Engineering of Suzhou University of Science and Technology was founded in 1985. It is one of the schools boasting the strongest capabilities in teaching and research of our university.

The School of Civil Engineering has 6 teaching units, including the Department of Architectural Engineering, the Department of Engineering Management, the Department of Road, Bridge and Traffic Engineering, the Department of Engineering Mechanics, the Teaching and Research Group of Materials Engineering, and the Civil Engineering Experimental Center. It has 6 research and consulting institutions, including the Jiangsu Province Key Laboratory of Structural Engineering for Universities and Colleges, the Steel Structure Research Institute, the Engineering Education Research Institute, the Real Estate Research Institute, the International Engineering Management Research Institute, and the Road Engineering Research Center.

The School of Civil Engineering has 145 staff members including 117 full-time teachers, among whom 24 are professors and 42 are associate professors; there are 6 doctoral supervisors and more than 50 master supervisors. 59% of the teachers have doctoral degrees. The teachers have won the following awards: National Excellent Teacher: 1; Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions at national as well as provincial and ministerial levels: 2; Special Government Allowance issued by the State Council: 2; Six Talent Peaks in Jiangsu Province: 4; Young and Middle-aged Academic Leaders of Jiangsu 333 Project: 6; Trainees of “Excellent Youth Teachers” Project in Jiangsu Province: 13; Excellent Science and Technical Innovation Team and Excellent Teaching Team in Jiangsu Province: the Steel Structure Research Group; Jiangsu Provincial-level Teaching Achievement (the first prize) in 2011 and 2013 respectively; National-level Teaching Achievement (the first prize) in 2014.

The School of Civil Engineering has 5 undergraduate majors: Civil Engineering, Engineering Management, Engineering Mechanics, Traffic Engineering, and Inorganic Non-metal Material Engineering. Currently, there are more than 1,730 undergraduate students. The major of Civil Engineering passed National Professional Education Assessment in 2005, 2010 and 2015. It serves as Construction Base of National Characteristic Majors and Comprehensive Reform Pilot Program of the Ministry of Education according to “The 12th Five-Year”. It was included into the Plan for Educating and Training Excellent Engineers in 2011. The majors related to civil engineering were listed as Key Majors in Jiangsu Province, and the major of Civil Engineering was approved as Jiangsu Brand Major in 2015. In 2015, Sino-Foreign Cooperative Education Project of Civil Engineering was approved by the Ministry of Education. The major of Project Management passed the National Professional Education Assessment in 2005, 2010 and 2015. It was identified as one of the characteristic majors in Suzhou University of Science and Technology in 2007. In 2011, Sino-Foreign Cooperative Education Project of Project Management was approved by the Ministry of Education. School of Civil Engineering has practical education platforms such as the National-level Practical Education Base for College Students, the Civil Engineering Practical Education Center for Universities and Colleges in Jiangsu Province, the Mechanics Experimental Teaching Center for Universities and Colleges in Jiangsu Province, and so on.

The major of Civil Engineering is the authorized unit for granting master degrees of first-level disciplines. Currently, 6 disciplines including Structural Engineering, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering as well as Protection Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Bridge and Tunnel Engineering, Management Science and Engineering (namely, Management of Construction Engineering) and Materials Science (namely, Inorganic Composite Materials) are authorized to grant master degrees, the School also has the authorization to grant engineering-based master degrees in the field of architecture and civil engineering. In 2011, the major of Civil Engineering was selected as the First Batch of Jiangsu Advantageous Disciplines. In 2014, it was selected as the Key Sequence Discipline of Jiangsu Advantageous Discipline Construction Project (Phase II). In 2018, it was selected as the Jiangsu Advantageous Discipline Construction Project (Phase III). It was awarded with the Excellent Prize in the Assessment of Master Degree Granting Units for First-level Disciplines in Jiangsu Province in 2015, and B-class Prize in the Fourth Round of National Discipline Assessment in 2017. Structural Engineering Laboratory is the Key Laboratory of Jiangsu Province.
